I have rotala indica its not red but its bunched like that. My 10 has miracle grow organic potting mix with sand on top of that. Very low tech. Don't do water changes but maybe once a month (walstad method) I'll take a picture and see if I can post it. For light I have 2 20 watt 6500k cfls.

Putting actual dirt in my tank scares me haha :) I like the looks of that plant, but I like ones with a bit wider leaves.

Look at cabomba and ludwigia. Dirt is totally fine as long as you get miracle grow organic POTTING mix. I mean there's dirt in the wild.

I really like the ludwigia!
If I did the dirt substrate, how do you clean it? Wouldn't it get super messy? And I already have a betta in there, would changing it harm him?

You put the sand on top. Poor the dirt on bottom then the sand then put a plate down and fill it. I have my Berta in that tank. Just put him in a bucket while you empty the tank.

So you don't stick the siphon into the dirt like you do with gravel?

@ ellewar- yeah, I like these ideas too! :)

No with sand you don't stick it in just go above it. Poop doesn't soak down.

Ohhhh okay! So for plants I'm thinking ludwigia and jungle Val (regular and corkscrew?) in the back, java fern and Anubius in the middle-ish and some clumps of grass or ground cover in the front. What would be a good one for the front?
