Question Why are rosetails undesirable?

Just wondering.

A few reasons.

The biggest reason is that rosetails can potentially produce weak, deformed, ugly fry called x-factors.

Second is that rosetails will not do well in shows.

Third is that the heavy finnage leads to tailbiting and it often weighs the males down.

+1 matt
And its very sneaky. I crossed two 4 ray fish, both of their parents were not rosetail, infact female had only 2 rays. I ended up with 3 x factors and and lots of fish with messed up scales. So even though no parents or grand parents had any indication of rosetail it must have been hiding somewhere in the blood and all it took was a bit of ignorance and bad luck for it to strike.

The goal of breeding fish to the IBC standard is a fish that has symmetry. The RT fish have tails much shorter than the other fins. And it gets flat out ugly the shorter they get. Combined with the bad scales and deformed fish.. it is not worth breeding towards. I know some like the type.. and that is fine. Not everyone wants a fish bred to a show standard.
