It might be. If the fins look like they're getting shorter periodically then yes it's rot. I'm not a fan of the way his anal fin is bunching at the bottom though, that tells me something is wrong and I'd do the 1 teaspoon per gallon treatment anyway, it won't hurt him to do it for a week with the daily water changes. Just make sure you dissolve the salt and acclimate him to the new water so he doesn't get shocked by it

Oh, ok! I will do that as soon as I buy some aquarium salt. I have some rock salt, but I don't know if it is pure NaCl. Here is a picture of him when I first got him. His fins were in worse shape, and have gotten better now. Was it fin rot from the beginning??

Hmm looks like it to me. If the rock salt doesn't have any caking additives to it you might be able to use it. Although it might just be easier to pick up some AQ salt at wal-mart or wherever and know for sure that it's safe to use ^_^

Oh, ok. If I had known this two days earlier, I could have gotten some when I bought his new neighbor. Now I have to see if someone will be willing to take me.

Np he'll be fine for a little while without it, for now just do some water changes every day to start getting the water nice and clean. Then when you get the salt you can start that.

Do they have heater's yet? If I remember correctly that was something that you never got for them. It might help to invest in a glass thermometer as well to float in the water so you can regulate their temp better. Lower temps can also cause diseases because the fish's immune system slows down whereas with higher temps he speeds up to stay healthy and active

I have finally been able to go and buy the aquarium salt. I was wondering if I should move him to a smaller tank while I a, treating him, or should I just keep him in the one he is in right now.
