All Hail Emperor Catullus!

My darling boy Pontus Rex passed away a week and a half ago. I've been devastated, but really wanted to get another betta to love. I went and bought a 5.5 gallon tank with new supplies on Tuesday and noticed a cute purplish, gray betta. I made plans to return tonight, as my local PetSmart gets new bettas on Thursdays.

I looked at every single new betta they got, but was drawn back to that same cutie I saw on Tuesday. His name is Emperor Catullus, but you can call him Tully!

Thank you! I'm really excited about it. I finally saved enough to upgrade to a nice 5.5 gallon!

Thanks! It reminds me of someone wearing bright red high heels

I was just about to ask how to classify his color. Thanks for the information! He seems to be very healthy and active, so I'm taking that as a good sign. I'm glad I put pantyhose over his tank filter because he's fascinated by the suction and keeps swimming over there!

Ahaha, I read minds as well! muhahaha....

Anyway! Yes glad that pantyhose is working out and then during a cleaning either just rinse it off or put the siphon over it to remove debris that's been caught so it doesn't clog.

He looks very young too! Maybe just hitting 3 months because of his tail size, it will grow out in the next few months ^_^ that's what my boy Remmy in my avatar looked like (fin wise not color lol) when I first got him. So tiny! But he's all growed up now haha

All hail the new Emperor!

A funny thing, I did the exact same thing with a betta the exact same color. I couldn't get him out of my mind and he was still there so I couldn't resist!
Mine darkened and is now a rich purplish blue.

lil, I'm glad to hear his tail looks normal for his age. I was worried it was scrunched up due to poor water quality at the pet store. I guess that's just how it looks before they grow out. I'm looking forward to watching him grow!

Riverotter, your betta sounds pretty. I'd love to see a picture!

Yup! There looks to be some discoloration but nothing that clean, warm water won't help

He looks to be close to a Feather tail but I'm sticking with Rose Tail for now. He's an HM with just a lot of branching in his ray's basically lol Can't wait to see if he'll flare up, I would love a picture of that!!

I know Rose Tail isn't actually a desirable trait, but I do find his tail to be adorable! He hasn't flared at me or even his reflection yet. I'm waiting to let him get acclimated to his new home before I try to get him to flare at a mirror. I don't want to add anymore stress to the little guy. When I do get a picture, I'll make sure you see it!

In your opinion, how often should I do water changes for my 5.5 gallon tank? I've seen many contradictory opinions on the forum. I was planning on following Oldfishlady's recommendations and doing a 50% change with a gravel vacuum.
