How long before the tank is safe?

Bowser is sitting in a cup in an inch of water while I wait for my ice to form, I have clove oil. I'm going to be doing combination clove oil/ice water for his going-away.

He shared a tank with Ludendorff who is also acting old so I'm not ruling out that he might suddenly go under like Bowser did. Just keeping my eye on him. My question is: there are live plants and Milly the nerite in there. If Lude passes or needs a going-away ceremony how long will the tank need before I can add another fish or Osha? And will Milly carry any diseases for long periods of time? I don't know if my boys are just old or if whatever's on Lude's gill was a disease and spread to both?

I removed the divider and I can tell now that's there's more space for plants to suck up harmful things. And I think I have one carbon filter cartridge left too.

Any advice?

Do you know what he has? If it is just old age there is no need to sanitize the tank, but if it is a contagious disease you may need to.

I would just use clove oil alone to put him down. 1 drop in a bit of tank water, shake it, and add him in. He will be out within seconds. The ice shock method is humane too but IME clove oil is easier on the fish and on you. Sorry you have to do this.

Thanks :( I don't know what it is. About a month or so ago I noticed a white thing on Lude's gill and Sakura told me what it might be (though I cannot remember for the life of me what she said) if he has what she said, it's contagious. Both boys I've had for about a year and a half (Lude was at the store at close to one year, Bowser was young so prob 6-7 months) this makes them at or slightly above 2 years old each. (both have been acting "old" lately. Bowser has stringy poop)

I read that clove oil may only knock them out. I want to freeze him to make sure.

Hmm.... You may want to sanitize everything if you want to be sure.

Clove oil knocks them out, and then they die... It is effective and quick. They will be unconscious in seconds but leaving the body in the solution for a couple of minutes guaranties it. Freezing would also work though.

Your fish, your choice.

I put about 1/2 a cup of water in a jar, add only a drop or two of clove oil, shake it, and then add the fish... You don't need much at all.
