Thank you for all these suggestions! I'm very grateful.
I will be getting a 2 gallon acrylic tank.
Does this change your recommendations?

Nope. You could use either of my suggestions in that tank :)

Yes. The 25 watt is rated for 2-7 gallons and I have several in 5, 3, 2 and 1 gallons and it works for all of them.

I have two of Wal-Mart's kritter-keeper type containers (1 gallon, come from the fish dept, run about $6). The 25 watt Hydor Theo works just fine in them. You will need to calibrate carefully, though.

I'm in the process of calibrating the Hydor theo now. Thanks, everyone.

Related question: Do youz guyz have mini filters in your heated mini aquaria? I want to distribute the heat evenly in the 1.8 gallon Kritter Keeper because the temp is definitely patchy when there's no current. And patchiness means greater temperature fluctuation from heater. Seems to me that the current from the Elite mini filter I put in there is STILL strong, despite turning it all the way down and stuffing sponge in the output. If I block the outtake too much, the motor starts rattling and heating up. I'm trying to avoid using a bubbler, BTW.
