Algue. Mistery snail (apple snail) what should I do?

Hello, I have two 5 G Fluval tanks (2 Bettas in each) and I am fighting brown algue right now. I would not care about it if tank was not planted but seems that algue can kill plants very easy and fast.
So I shorten light day to 6 hours.
I clearned the tank.
Made large water change.
I added some bottle water that slightly lowed PH.
I still feed fishes every day though.

I bought mistery snail yesterday since I did not fine nirite snail. But I still can not decide should I let him in tank that snail or return him. This snail seems not active by the way, hope he will not die on me. I keep him in the same water given from the store and I gave him some fish flakes today. He did not move during the day. Maybe he will eat during night if he is still alive.
Please advise what should I do about snail.
5 G planted tank, 2 bettas devided.

Put him in a jar with some of your aquarium water. Sometimes snails take a while to come out of their shell, so to speak. Don't feed him; if he's not eating it will just pollute the water. When he comes out, feed.

Change 100% of his water until you either take him back or put him in a tank.

Thank you, RussellTheShihTzu
Today poor guy died on me. I do not know what I did wrong. I bought him Sunday night. I kept him all night and Monday morning in aquarium water from store. He almost did not move. Yesterday I moved him to conditioned water I use for my tank. It seemed he tryed to move, but hid again. Yesterday morning I saw some whitish staff coming from him (smth like white snots mixed with his poop).
This morning he did not move.
2 hours ago he fell of his shale and water is begining to smell. There is some small insect like a flee runing around him very fast on the bottom of container. Maybe that thing killed him.
The snail smelled a bit even when it was alive.
I do not know but it is terrible experience. I am afraid I will never have snail again.
At least my fishes never smell. I can not tolarate terrible odors...
