Entertainment at the library...

Kids: Don't do drugs. You'll be the target of public ridicule. It's not cool. It's really not cool. A fried egg has nothing on this. Does anyone else remember that commercial? I think it was in the 80's...

This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. *CRACK* *SIZZLE*

We have a library patron in (note, I work in a very very poor area of the barrio, a bad neighborhood) who has had a little too much of ...something.

I had to wake him up, because he passed out at the 15 minute computers.

He then wandered around for a while, and then went behind the circulation desk and sat at a staff computer. It took a couple of minutes to notice, because we were busy with things, and we chased him away.

Other patrons started to notice. There was much giggling.

He asked for the bathroom key. I gave it to him. He tried to get into the janitorial closet. I steered him in the right direction.

More giggling.

It took him a little while to manage the lock. The public and I were placing bets as to whether he'd forget the key inside.

Surprise: He remembered the key. Good thing no one was betting for money.

He tried to get behind the circulation desk again. Staff chased him away.

This is entertaining. He appears to be completely harmless, so we're all just kind of watching him to see what happens next. It's not like we can get security out here any time sooner than the next two hours, anyway.

Addendum: Had to call the ambulance for him before the end of the shift.

There's a reason I prefaced the whole thing with "Don't do drugs," heh.

Ya i thought so. Drugs are the dumbest things in the world. I have seen what they do to people in school. So stupid!

I don't like being put in the position of wondering whether I'll have to use my CPR training before the paramedics come. Whether you're hiking off-trail, jaywalking, boating without a vest, doing illegal (or legal!) drugs...putting yourself in a position where someone else has to save your life (or accidentally kills you because they didn't see you) is not only stupid, but unkind. What if he'd passed out in the chair and looked like he was asleep, instead of on the floor? I don't want to find a corpse at closing time. Who needs those nightmares?

There is the possibility that the young man was actually a diabetic going into shock, apparently the symptoms are similar to what he displayed. Thought I'd note that. It's hard to be charitable with what I've seen in the last couple of years, though.

A librarian at one of the other "sketchy" neighborhoods has found three bodies.

I had no idea when I took this job that I'd have to handle drug overdoses, altercations involving firearms, and (two!) kidnappings. Ah, public service. The worst I expected was maybe a heart attack. :p

I remember the library, I used to steal my books there. They still have them?

We're busier than we've ever been. Thinking that libraries are dead is about as up to date as thinking bettas live in mud puddles. :p

Yes, I've heard it's a great place to borrow a cake pan and a VHS tape of Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo.

I'm kidding.

A friend of mines wife works at a library and hooks me up with digital copies of every movie that comes through there. I have like 400 movies on Vudu runnin' that gimmick.

This reminds me of a story from about two years ago.

We were walking home from the library and there's someone who looks like he's reaching for coins out of that coin thingy in the car (don't know what it's called). We notice, that he's actually bent over and passed out! He smells like alcohol and he's rambling incoherent, so we call 911. Turns out, he's 17 and had waaaaaay too much alcohol.
