King Betta.. anyone heard anything?

I was in the Petco at Union Square (NYC) last night and I saw for the first time "King Bettas". Rather expensive at $13.99... they look like over-sized female bettas. Anyone knows where they come from?

I've heard of them. They might be oversized plakats, which are short finned bettas.

I heard there was a breeder somewhere in Asia that breeds huge bettas - like some that can get up to 4", and he (or they) had a ton. I guess some got here in the USA.

I think the general consensus is that the ones that you see in pet stores are not real giants, just oversized plakats. I saw them when I got my last betta. They were big for sure, but not anywhere near 4". Neat, but I liked my HM better ;)

I saw these in our petco, as well. There were only a few, and ALL of them had some nasty fungus/bacterial infection. I suspect they all died, since the next time I went back, they were all gone.

I felt bad for them, since they were keeping them in the same size cup as the rest of the bettas, despite the giants being about twice their size..

I like the long finned bettas better myself.
