i know i have posted this before buty i really need some one to help me PLEASE!!!!!!!

i ahve had a betta for 6 months and i still have no clue what to do to take excellect care of him. i have kept him alive so far but i still am not sure what to do. i really need someone to help me please. i have him housed in a 10 gallon tank with a zebra fish, pleco and an albino rainbow shark. i test the water before i put new water in to make sure the level's are all safe and they have always read the same before i add new water. low to nothing at all. i do water changes every 5 or 7 days depending on what the water looks like. right now my betta has a giant lump forming around his gills and i am worried that he maybe in danger. the lump started on his left side and is now working its way to the right side of his gills.

Hi there,

Is it his actual gill that is swollen or a lump near the gill? Bettas can get bacterial gill disease which can cause swelling and inflammation of the gills, it is difficult to see exactly what is going on in the photo. If it is bacterial gill disease treat will a good bacterial medication such as tri- sulfa or tetracycline. His water does appear a bit murky but it sounds as though your tank maintainance program is pretty good, do you give the gravel a good siphon when you clean the tank?

the swelling is right behind his gills. and today when i got up and fed him and the other fish the swelling has now gone full circle behind his gills. i had jusdt fed them lights106 and my camera is not the greatest either. and i do syphon the stones every time i clean the water. i pull them out and put clean ones in the tank every 5-7 days.

I believe this is constipation. To help cure him, you need to feed him nothing at all for three days and if that doesn't work, add pure epsom salts to his water, at 1tsp/g.

I agree with Mattsbettas. That definitely looks like constipation to me. Try the 3 or so days without food, and if his body starts to go down then everything should be fine. If not, add the salt. I would also do water changes often, just to be sure he's not prone to any infections. Don't feel bad for fasting him for a few days, you're doing it for his wellbeing. =] Good luck!
