New halfmoon betta!

My new betta! Currently unnamed right now. He's a halfmoon betta as said on the cup but I have yet to make him flare for me. He's reacting wonderfully to the tank and eats well. Fed him 3 Omega One pellets and he gobbled them up. The detritus worms in the tank are also a wonderful snack he's been munching on. I'm very excited but worried about the black edge on his caudal fin. Not sure if that's coloration or fin rot. Didn't look like anything was missing or falling off him but I got a hospital tank on standby for him if the next morning comes with less fin.

For now here's to his good health!

Thank you! I love his colors. Was surprised to see a purple betta there since they usually have blue and red ones. Also saw two elephant ear bettas which is weird for my petsmart.

Haha, yeah. I don't really trust the cup until I see him flare. Which I did a few moments ago and he's a lovely halfmoon! Hopefully I'll get him to flare for me tomorrow to show off those fins.

He is so handsome. Love the purple border on his caudal.

I do as well! I thought it was black which made me worry it was fin rot. Under closer inspection though it's more blueish/purple. So glad it isn't but I'm going to keep a close eye on him until my fears are gone.

What do you think? Looks like a halfmoon? Tried to get a picture of him flaring but he camera shy and deflares when I get close. Best I can get is the aftermath.

A halfmoon betta's caudal fin spreads a full 180 degrees, by looking at these pictures he doesn't seem to be a full halfmoon, maybe a mix with a VT.

I have to disagree. I believe he does appear to be a full halfmoon. The 180 degree rule applies to the tail's appearance when the fish is flaring not when it is in a relaxed state.

That is true, looking at these pictures, I'm pretty sure they won't spread a 180 degrees when he's fully flaring.

He did flare, and it obviously was not close to a 180 spread. Regardless, it doesn't matter. He's still beautiful. You definitely can call him a halfmoon or delta, that too doesn't matter. At a show, he would be a faulted halfmoon, right guys? Lol.
