That's a java moss ball. Suppose to be like that. I think most of us thought you were talking about marimo balls. Java moss ball needs something to cling onto so they can grow in that pattern, which is very exceptional. You will do yourself a disfavor for cutting it lol.

Wow lilaugrim, same timing, you beat me by SECONDS lol.

Well a Java moss ball looks like the one you have, notice it looks sort of stringy? And then a Marimo looks almost hairy like fluffy fur,

should look like this one: https://www.google.com/search?q=mari...08%3B728%3B553

and this is a java moss ball like yours: https://www.google.com/search?q=mari...s%3B1024%3B768

if it was tethered with a weight I still think you got the fake one. Cut it in half and see what's inside.

Good photos of JAVA MOSS BALLS here:

Ugh. I don't like the stringiness of it. Can i trim it down to make it furry? or should i just go buy a marimo moss ball? But the teenagers at the lps don't know anything about fish or plants.

You should probably return it and buy a marimo ball.

That's okay. Just keep it then. Leave it be, let it live. :)

You could trim it but it won't do much, it will still be stringy. You could however unwrap it and tie it down to some driftwood or multiple rocks to make a carpet out of it lol you can also buy Marimo's online if you haven't looked at Ebay or AquaBid, there's some pretty good deals out there. I got 6 small balls for .99 cents, granted they're the size of dimes but I get to watch them grow now, however many years it takes to do that since they are spectacularly slow growers!
