Rusty's New Home

Today I went to PetSmart and got Rusty a cave-like home where he can rest and shut out his water world for the night. I am such a good betta owner; thank you's go out to all of the experience betta owners who have taught me so much. He hasn't discoverd it yet. I did a 100% water change. I even added some API Stress Coat and a 1/2 teaspoon of AQ Salt as a water treatment. I read in several posts and books that this is good to keep them healthy. Is this okay?

I will try to feed him a few pellets before I go to bed.

Hope he likes his new home

I don't believe it is a good idea to keep Bettas in a salt solution except when medicating.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am really glad you are trying hard to take care your betta. Salt is for when they are sick. If you want a minor amount of salt in the water go buy Jungle Water Conditioner with Aloe. I add just a little bit to a gallon. I use that and a little Prime. The Jungle Conditioner has some sodium in it but not much. However, directly adding salt to the tank when your fish isn't sick is just hard on his kidneys long term.

The other thing you might want to address is your filter inlet. Without it being covered there is a good chance his tail or another part of his body will get caught in it and he could drown. You can get a filter net, pantyhose and a rubber band or a filter presponge like in this link to help solve that problem. Until you do cover it I'd keep the filter off for his safety.

I agree with the others. AQ salt should only ever be used temporarily to treat diseases. Long time use can damage your fish's kidneys and diminish the salt's effectiveness in killing bacteria and parasites.

Nonetheless, you seem like a very caring and responsible person. Rusty is a lucky boy to have such a nice home and owner. :)
