Errr, I'm not the original poster to this thread, I was just helping out.
In fact salt is perfectly fine for them if used less than 14 days at lower dosages of 3 tsp/gal and under. It is stressful as any medications are but as medications are constantly being improved, now a day's is getting to the point where we can use medications and they'll be less stressful on the fish. Of course, you need to buy them still and at the time if a person doesn't have the money to go out and by a 15 dollar pack of General Cure, salt will work just fine.
I'm a firm believer that warm, good water will always be the first and most effective treatment of all.
But yes if used excessively or if the fish's immune system is already been seriously compromised by something else, the salt can cause liver/kidney damage which is usually more known as one of the Dropsy's that fish can get. I know that, but with anything and everything, if you don't overdose you'll be fine.
