This is where I admit my ignorance, so I attached a picture. what is this contraption? Is this the "filter"? The flow was so swift, I baffled it the the pantyhose, something I read somewhere.

Is there something else I connect to this "contraption" that is called a filter? I don't know what I'm talking about obviously.

Oh okay, so you don't know what it is either? I see a label, does that say anything? Looks like it might be some sort of powerhead but I'm not entirely sure.

Penflex Cascade 300. My finger is over a hole that forces water flow and the pantyhose is also over a spout that forces water flow. A white airhose came with it, but I don't know what to do with it.

I know everybody is groaning or laughing.

Ah okay I found it, it's the Penn Plax Cascade internal power filter 300. It's a regular internal power filter then http://www.google.com/search?q=penn+...w=1366&bih=653

And no I'm actually not laughing or anything because it puzzled me too! lol, no worries ^_^

So yeah, just a regular filter and that will do just fine, looks as if it's rated for 10 gallons so you might want to get another to make it 20 total, that might be the easiest thing or just get another sponge filter rated for 10-15 gallons would work too.

To have a filter in the tank or to double the filtration?

Choose (lol):

1. Keep the existing system as is.
2. Purchase a second sponge filter.
3. Replace the existing system with a sponge filter suitable for 10-15 gallons.

Number 2. I find it's better to have more filtration rather than equal to the tank or less. This makes it easier for Beneficial Bacteria to colonize in/on the filters and gives more room for expansion which means more fish technically! So yeah, just go with Number 2 then

(lol there could be a great Austin Powers reference or Shrek reference there!)
"Who...does...number 2...work for?" or "pick number 3 mi'lord!" *holds up two fingers* lol

Thanks so much, lilnaugrim! You are the best. So was Shrek!

Now to choose the right filter. Do you have a recommendation right off your head? I think this one should be a sponge filter.
