Sick?

Hi all,
this is going to be about Sirius Black, my 10yo son's betta. Sirius has been with us since November and he's a pretty happy fish. He lives by himself in a 3.5 gallon tank, has a filter, lighting and live plants; we change out half the water every week and make sure the parameters stay within norm.
Today we came home after a night out and noticed a strange spot on the back of the fish. This is what it looks like from the top:

And this is what it looks like from the side:

I've never had a sick fish before and my kid is freaking out. Can anyone please shed some light on what this might be - some kind of disease, or an injury, or something else? The fish was totally fine in the morning. He also ate pretty well at night so no loss of appetite or lethargy were noted.
Thanks so much in advance.

Yes, I'm not the only one that names bettas after Harry Potter characters. But to the point.. Is that dot thing elevated like a bump? If its a large lump it could be some sort of tumor though that's not common at all. Also it could be a fungus. You could run by the pet store and go ahead and start treating with an anti-fungus/antibacterial fish med.

Will do. What's a good med to buy? Thanks!
Edited to reply: wasn't elevated last night and didn't look fuzzy like a fungus. No idea what it could be... I did tell my kid to pick a different name for the fish as karma would catch up with it, but he just wouldn't listen...

I always like to go to this page whenever I think something is wrong with my betta: http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm it says a few brands too of medicine. Also maybe put in some aquarium salt. It sounds like he's well taken care of though and hopefully it will resolve itself with the help of a product or two. Someone with a more expert eye than me might come on here too knowing exactly what it is. I hope it's not *serious* though.. That is my only Harry Potter pun that's ever been relevant! Hehe. Best wishes to Sirius.
