Hi betta friends, I`m new to this forum also and will most likely have 1001 questions to ask. I have been keeping tropical fish for a while now (I have a 40 gal) but have never had a betta before until last week, and I`ve already fell in love with him. For the first week, I had him in this very large goblet (2 Gal) but today I moved him into a 10 gal. I put 1 cave hide in it and an open cave swim through for him, along with 8 assorted live plants. When he was in the goblet, he had a pretty good bubble nest going, so I guess he was happy and content. Ok...my first question: I have read so much about filters...need them...dont need them...I`m throughly confused. I understand that they dont like the water flow that a filter brings, but I want him to have clean water. Could you folks give me some advise on this matter? If I do need a filter, which one is best suited for a betta? Thanks for your time and I hope to hear back from some of you good people.

Ok, this is a highly disputed topic. btw, welcome to the forum, good luck with your bettas and you are welcome to ask any question you like.

You don't NEED a filter. they are important if you don't plan on give water changes about 2 times a week. If your betta has a problem with the filter you can use a piece of sponge in most cases to limit the flow... unless your betta is like mine and throughly spoiled and picky *he hates his filter* If you want to cycle your tank or are not the most...with-it person, its probably best to get a filter.

good luck and welcome!

Hi Emmnemms, and thank you very much for your input. For a 10 gal, non-filtered tank....would you recommend a 50 % water change, and how often?

um probably a 30 water change twice a week is what i suggest. Others may differ. Just make sure you water NEVER becomes cloudy or really gross before your waterchange. The water change is not meant to get rid of that stuff, its mean to prevent it.

also i suggest getting a gravel-vac. It is fairly inexpensive and will take out all the yuck that settles into the gravel. Dramaqueen on here uses a turkey baster for her 4 gallons... so i don't know if that works better...?

The turkey baster works pretty good. The gravel vac may work better, though.

I haven't tried a gravel vac before. I'm kind of afraid of making a mess with it.

lol, why are you afraid? if you are really worried, take the fish out of the water first. then use the vac.

Well, yeah, besides worrying about the fish, I would worry about getting water everywhere and making a mess.
