You had him in 2.5g tank with another fish? Was there a divider? What kind of fish is the other fish? A 2.5g tank isn't big enough IMO for multiple fish, that could be part of the problem. How often do you change the water in the 2.5g & how much water do you change? When say black or brown on his tail are you talking about the eges of his tail? Does is look thick? Has his tail gotten shorter? Can you post a pic? When you say "gave him a little aq salt" how did you give it to him & how much is a little? Aq salt should be completely dissovled in a cup then poured into the tank. If you can answer the questions I'm asking we might be able to better help you.

Sounds to me like you are under feeding your Betta, you give him one pellet every other day is that right ? That is not enough food for you Betta to be healthy. What type of pellets are you giving him when you do feed him ?

Please answer all of the questions I asked previously. I would say part of his problem is stress from seeing the other betta if your divider is clear.

I have a few suggestions that may help Matthew.....

1) A 2.5 gal tank is fine.

You don't need to move him to a smaller tank. Is there a reason you did this?

As Shellieca said, only Matthew should be in the 2.5 gal tank. A tank that size is good for a single fish. But it's too small to have more than one fish in it.

2) A temp of 77F is OK (for now).

This is at the low end of the 'acceptable' range for bettas. He's OK for now. But you don't want the temperature to go much lower than this. (If your house is cold over the winter, for example, you will need to add a heater to his tank.)

3) What brand of pellets does he get?

Pellets are a good way to feed them. But what brand does he get? Just like with "people food," some fish foods are better than others. If you tell us the brand, we can help you decide if it's the best food for him.

4) One pellet every other day isn't enough....

Do you just give him one pellet every other day? This isn't enough food for him..... A bettas stomach is about the size of its eye. It's not good to overfeed them, but you also don't want to underfeed them.

After we know the brand of food you give him, we can help you determine how many pellets he'll need every day. (Some brands are bigger than others.)

5) How often do you change the water in his tank?
6) Do you change ALL of the water each time, or just a portion of it?

Clean warm water, and good food, are the two most important things, when it comes to caring for bettas. In an unfiltered 2.5 gal tank like Matthew's, you should do two water changes per week: one 100% and one 50% water change each week.

7) Bettas don't need aquarium salt on a regular basis.

Aquarium salt stresses their kidneys, and can cause bloating and constipation. It's only needed for a SHORT time, and only if you need to treat a specific problem.

I would stop using the aquarium salt, since using it can cause problems.

8) Can you post a photo?

A picture would be very helpful, so we can see how he looks. Actually, two photos would be even better.... Can you post a photo of Matthew, and another photo showing his tank?

OK....

1) Try feeding him 4 or 5 pellets per day.

He needs to eat a little more. You can adjust the amount later on, if needed, but 4-5 pellets per day is closer to what he needs.

2) Do two water changes per week: one 100% and one 50%.

Clean warm water is important. Until you get the filter running, you'll need to change the water more frequently. Since he's not feeling well, I recommend doing a 100% water change today. Then, in about 4 days, change out half his water. Do this every week until you get the filter installed.
