My Fish Tank Stinks

Okay,
so I got my fish I few days ago and when I opened the bad of pebbles I got it smelt kinda funny so I rinsed them and then put them in the tank. It has been about two days and now the whole tank smells like the pebbles did. Should I be concerned for my fish?

What exactly does it smell like? Does it smell like a chemical?

That's rather strange. I don't really know what to think about that.

I just know I got a new decoration a couple weeks ago and about 36 hours after being submerged it smelled like burning plastic or spray paint, and the water smelled the same and it was so strong it gave me a headache. There was also a strange oily looking substance floating out of the decoration and sitting on the water surface. It was nasty. I'm surprised my fish didn't die. She's doing fine though, and I immediately threw that decoration away.

Someone else may have better advice for you, but I would at least just keep an eye out for any of the things I said about my experience with the decoration.

Did you rinse the pebbles in warm water before putting them in the tank?

Is there any kind of white/clear fuzzy looking filmy/slimy stuff on anything in your tank? A betta that I just got from a friend, came to me with a tank that had this nasty smell, and a clear mucous stuff all over everything. From what I've read, that was a bacteria, and it smells like what you described and can come from something that you put into the tank. And poor water changes, which was the case with my betta from my friend.

I would tear down and rinse and/or soak everything in water as hot as you can get it. Fake plants and decor soak for 10 minutes then rinse and rinse the gravel in a sieve in small batches going about 5 minutes for each batch.
Let everything dry out for like two days spread the gravel and pebbles out of paper towels to dry. Putting it all in the sun in your yard is nice if you can. Then put it all back together and see if that works.
I had to do that when my water kept getting cloudy and smelly no matter what I did.

Everything will be super super clean and if anything that would cause problems it would have to be an alien from Mars or something.
