Hey everybody,
I'm pretty new to these boards. I've used them for research before as I have 4 betta fish but never registered/posted. I have 2 crown tail and 2 veil tale bettas - all males. I have a habit of picking out some of the more pathetic looking ones from the stores as I feel like they are the most in need of better attention than stores give. All of our fish, once in their new homes and a dose of almond leaves, have flourished in personality and colors... yeah I'm kind of proud of that and you all should to. I want to thank you all for some very useful information!
Our newest betta, Tai Lung, is a red and violet veil tale and we've had him for a couple months now. He has quite the attitude and loves to play with his "angry stick". (We card the tanks as well so the fish get to show off for each other once a day.) Well, last night I had quite the scare. My fiance was doing a full water change and cleaning out the bowls. Usually we have a small strainer that we use to cover the drain in the sink when we clean their rocks and transfer the fish. For some reason, he didn't use the strainer as he was transferring Tai back to his tank and whoop! down the garbage disposal he went! After some panicking, we finally found that the only thing that might work and was able to fit down the drain was a small metal ladel.
We tried for 2 hours to get him out and as long as he was jumping around and I could see him breathing, I wasn't going to give up. Luckily he didn't go down into the trap! (we ran a little water in the drain from time to time but not enough for him to slip down) Anyways, I finally was able to get him out and dumped him straight into his bowl. Poor little guy's dorsal and tail are torn up and he has some knicks and scratches on him but nothing that seems too deep. (I give credit to the almond leaf for toughening up his scales.) I also picked up a health aid to put in his tank to fight off infections today. It's called Betta Revive. I was very worried about him getting infected since the garbage disposal isn't the cleanest place for a betta!
So the battle of betta vs garbage disposal = Betta Wins!! Brings a whole new meaning to the term "fighting fish" after him being down there so long and jumping around and making it out alive instead of impaling himself. I couldn't believe how long he went without water!
Anyways, I just wanted to say that if anybody has any advice or information as to help him besides keeping his water clean, please feel free to pass along that info. And thanks in advance! :)
