Looking for a small filter for a 2.5 betta tank.

Hello all.

I bought for my nephew a Top Fin 2.5 tank that came with led light and a filter. But the filter is too noisy and the current is too strong and betta struggles when it swims near the filter.

Which filter should I get that's small enough and gentle in current for the betta?

I was thinking getting the Aquaclear 20 filter, but I don't know if the current will be strong even if it was baffled with a piece of plastic bottle.

Please and thanks!

That filter looks good.

I forgot to mention something! I'm also looking for an underwater filter in case the HOB filter is too strong the current. I don't know if the betta is a jumper or not.

That Azoo is a good, small HOB filter. Many members use it and recommend it. A sponge filter is a natural for a small Betta tank. Sponge Filter tutorial. Unfortunately you have to buy the pump and filter separately.

A small internal filter with a spraybar would also work fine. One of our old pros really likes this one: AquaTop IF201 Internal Filter w/Spray Bar (free shipping/20% discount Aquarium Internal Filter IF-201) for only $11.... PM RussellTheShihTzu for the discount code.

I'm assuming you can mail order from the mainland??

I use the CAF-10 sponge filter in both my tanks and really like it. It's super tiny.

I have a jardin mini cylinder sponge filter run from a tetra whisper air pump (for up to 10g).

I like all the recommendations. I did a little fix on the filter that came with the tank today and the current is a little less intense now. But i'll change the filter on the future. I also added a "compact sword" real plant (I think that's what it's called) and it looks great.

I LOVE sponge filters for betas and delicate finned fish. They have more room for good bacteria growth than a lot of your cheap small hob filters that come with the kits, and super gentle with fins and current.

Sponge filter 3$

Air pump 8$

How do you clean those sponge filters? Do you have to remove the sponge in a month or more? Do they make big bubbles that disturbs the surface for the betta?

Sorry for so many questions.
