A male with no beard?

My newest boy is confusing me! I saw him flare for the first time today. He stiffened all his fins, puffed out his gills, and... there was no beard. I have been watching him flare at his tankmate for the past ten minutes or so, and... no beard. Does this mean my pretty boy is deformed? Or is he maybe not flaring fully? I've never seen this before... Maybe he's gender-bending or something? He also tends to take the head-down position when flaring, which is typically a female trait.

When he is not flaring at you, but at something else so you have a back or side view, check inside the faceplate. Some have smaller beards that do not expand further than their faceplates, and some also have clear beards giving the appearance of no beard.
