So you just stand back and zoom instead of trying to get up close with a macro setting?

With the 18mm you can get close physically close to the subject. I get about 9 inches from the fish to get the close ups. If the fish is a bit farther in the tank yes you can zoom.

Cropping the photo if it is in focus can make a shot look like it was taken with a macro. But you have to have the photo in focus.

There is a lot to fish photography well there is a lot to photography in general. Getting the right angle when you use a flash or light is very important.
