Question Not Flaring?

I've had Lucifer (my red HM) for about 2 months now, and he hasn't flared once. He swims normally, lives in a filtered 3gal tank and has every thing he needs. He battled some fin tearing which lead to very mild fin rot, but all that's over now. I can see he's fins healing when he actually stays still for a few seconds.

To try and get a better look, I held a mirror up to him and he just twitched at like always does when a person walks up to or by the tank
then swam off behind his leaf hammock.

So is there a serious reason why he doesn't flare?

Some Bettas just don't flare. It doesn't mean anything's wrong with him.

My male usually doesn't flare. I've actually only seen him flare once at my female after cowering in the corner for a long time while she tried to get his attention (their tanks were temporarily next to each others while I readied his new tank). If I put a mirror in front of him, he either turns tail and hides or plays dead (completely motionless, even his pectoral fins are barely moving.

He's still a young fish, not yet six months-old. He may still develop an attitude. Keep teasing him with the mirror.

I believe he's an adult. I got him from PetSmart a little over 2 months ago, and I haven't noticed him getting bigger.

Pet-store fish are usually not older than 3 months. That's how I inferred his age. A healthy Betta can reach nearly full-size in 6 months.

There's nothing wrong with that. Flaring can cause stress to a fish
