10 gallon divided tank..setup?

Right now I am working on cycling my tank. I will be moving into a college dorm room on June 2nd and think I want to put 2 bettas in the 10 gallon.

Would I need 2 sponge filters or will 1 work? 1 male and 1 female or 2 males?

I'm new to bettas so any other suggestions/tips are highly appreciated!

Most divided tanks I've seen only have one filter. Gender is up to you, either works. You might want to put several plants in though, so not to stress them out until they get use to each other.

It doesnt really matter whether you chose males or females, theoretically they will realize they cant get to each other and will leave each other alone, but there is always an exception. My male and female are in a ten gallon divided and they defiinitly notice each other but are more interested in food and stuff than each other.

As for the setup, I dont know anything about sponge filters but one filter is all you need for the tank. That is if you use a commmercial divider because they have holes in it so stuff can pass through.If youmake your own and it is solid, I dont know if you'd need too. I just put the filter on the females side and the heater on the males.

I just recently put two Bettas in a 10 gallon with a divider. A male and a female. They are doing great. All you need is one filter and one heater, the divider provides enough flow between the sides.

gender, don't matter, as long as they're seperated it's fine.

filters, I use one but you can use 2 if you want to.
