Melafix? Bettafix? What's the difference and why is it dangerous?

I went to the store today to get some new gravel for my cheekie, I saw a whole bunch of fish medication and thought I should buy some just in case so I wouldent have to rush to the store if he got sick. I get home and all I Find is people posting how horrible melafix is, unfortunatly that is what I bought because it looked most appealing and I read before hand not to get bettafix.
Now I'm reading that they are the same but one is more diluted.

Can someone please clarify what medication I should be buying?

The "fix" meds are said by some to coat the labyrinth organ of a Betta because it contains tea tree oil. Others say if dosed correctly its fine. Others say its snake oil meaning it doesn't do anything to treat an ill fish. There is a thread on here somewhere all about it with posts by people who have used it successfully. Like many things you have to research as best you can & then make your own decision on using it.

EDIT: I found the thread

+1 with darkangel. There are lots of meds depending on what needs to be treated. Ich doesn't need meds most of the time. Epsom salts for bloating/constipation, Aq salt for mild fin rot & other stuff, Kanaplex, metro, maracyn & maracyn 2 & so on & so on.

The two main ones to always have on hand IMO are Epsom salt & Aq salt. Maracyn & Maracyn 2 would be the next two. I also have Kanaplex, metro, API General Cure. I've stocked up slowly due to treating different things. Some stuff, depending on your location would need to be ordered. I'm lucky my LFS carries pretty much everything. Keep in mind they have a shelf life so if you stock up you'll need to check the dates before you use it.

Petsmart & Petco will have some; maracyn, Maracyn 2, general cure, Aq salt. Epsom salt your local store in the first aid or beauty section just male sure there are no additives or perfumes. Kanaplex, metro usually need to be ordered or an LFS.
