Do they yawn?

I only noticed this with my orange betta. I see him opening up his mouth really wide every once in a while like he's yawning. This is not when he's eating. It seems totally random. Just wondering what the heck he's doing.

They often do this before they are about to make a bubble nest.

Does he ever let a bubble out when he does that? Before I moved Galileo to the 2 gallon tank (as opposed to the half gallon vase) he would look at me when I walked over to him and, without returning to the surface, open his mouth and blow a bubble at me. Not that I have any idea what it means lol, I'm just wondering :P I always thought it was kinda funny when Galileo did that.

My betta yawns. When bettas breathe through their gills, they have to take water in through their mouth, then exhale it through their gills. It doesn't really mean anything, only that he was doing exactly what humans and other 'lunged' animals do... getting an 'oxygen boost'.

I've seen bettas do this as well, and I always just thought it was either a yawn or some sort of stretch. It's still very cute.

Yes it's very cute!!
The orange guy builds a bubble nest every day. Maybe this is why I see the him yawning and not the other one. He doesn't blow bubbles at me but I can only imagine how funny that would be!!
