Question Does anybody else's pet store do this?

I was at Petco today, buying some freeze dried blood worms and looking for new decor for Samson, and I decided to check out the other fish and aquatic animals. In the middle of the aquarium section, there is a relatively large (maybe 60 gal) aquarium that the store usually keeps aquatic turtles in. But this time there weren't any turtles. Instead there were male bettas, probably about 6 or 7, all housed together in that tank, with no dividers or plants or anything to block them from one another or from at least seeing one another. It was completely empty aside from the water and the fish! I was just wondering if this would be considered safe or not? I know that male bettas aren't supposed to be housed together, but is it acceptable since the tank is larger? Or should this be brought to the manager's attention and corrected?

If they are male, thats a danger for each fish in there and will be against petco standards. Have you brought it to attention to the manager there? I like to place males sometimes in the main tanks, but only 1 in each to give them some swimming time but never together.

Nope. Not good at all... There's probably going to be a blood bath. My bet is the one with the shortest fins is going to slaughter the rest. :( Whoever did it shouldn't be allowed to work/shop there.

I called an hour ago and asked to speak to a manager, and when I told the manager my concerns, she said they do that all the time without any problems! Now I know I don't know everything about keeping an aquarium.. but I'm pretty sure that's a huge lie. When I was there I saw one betta chasing another that was swimming away as fast as he could. And I'm sure that was only a small sample of the aggression.

Next time I go, if I see the bettas like that again, I'll definitely take photos. I'm just hoping all those little guys are okay and back into their own individual cups. The cups are better than an all out battle field.

Report it to corporate, even if you don't have pictures. And tell them what the manager said - if it's against company policy, then that manager is not only violating company policy, but also doesn't care and assumes that most people won't know it's against company policy.
