Filter change?

Hey, I was just wondering how often your supposed to change your filter cartidge. I have minein a 10g and in it has the actual filter wrappedin fine mesh or watever, but then it has a rough porous sponge like thing. Do I change both or what? I looked at them and they still look clean so I guess its not time yet.

Even if it looks clean, the mesh and sponge are not what's cleaning the water. There's probably a "gravel" inside the cartridge right? That's what's doing the filtering of the dangerous chemicals and such. The mesh is pprobably only there to keep the gravel clean of debris. Those kinds of cartridges need to be replaced every month.
Or, I bet the sponge is holding your good bacteria for you? Cuz if it is, you don't wanna replace that.

Yah theres something inside the mesh cartridge but I dont know what, probably a fine gravel. So that all I have to replace not the rough sponge-ish piece. This isin one of those crappy whisper filters btw, in case your familiar.

The "gravel" stuff might be carbon. I'm not sure, just a guess.

Probably close to a month now. Im getting a new one tomorrow.

As for the cories I would really like to get one but you cant get just one. This algae bloom is in a 10g divided and a group of six cories cant live in a 5g side with a betta. So the only option would be to house the bettas in what was going to be my sorority, which is a real option, but I still kinda want to do the sorority.
