Tank cleaning

Hi, my 2.5 gallon tank was previously occupied by my sweet, dear male Betta, Shimmer, who I also nicknamed Shimeroo, who died Wednesday morning. (I had transferred him to a one-gallon tank which was nice and clean with new conditioned water for the three days before he died, I believe of old age.)

Anyway, I cleaned out the 2.5 gallon tank (Mini Bow with Whisper filter and cover) with nothing but hot water and scrubbed with white paper towels. It still has that icky smell though. Any advice on how to get the fishy smell out?

Also, can I use the same filter cartridge that was pretty new when I put it in, or should I discard it and buy a new cartridge?

I'm so sorry to hear about Shimmer. I would try vinegar and water. I think you use a 50-50 solution. I used vinegar and water to clean out a 4 gallon acrylic tank that had been sitting in someone's garage for a few years and it worked just fine. Just make sure you rinse really, really good. And it will take the fishy smell out of it pretty good! lol Hope this helps.
