Betta Fish Flaring

When my blue betta fish flares, the inside of his gills have red on them. Is this a sign that he has inflamed gills?

From what I understand (and others should feel free to correct me), this is a sign that your water quality might not be that great. Perhaps you should open a thread in the Diseases and Emergencies section.

At any rate, is your tank cycled? Do you have a filter? What temperature is your water? When was the last time you performed a water change, and what percentage (approximately) did you change?

I was told that was actually a good sign because that means he's getting enough oxygen.

The last time I performed a water change was 2 days ago and I change the water every week. Every time I change it I do a 100% water change. My tank is not cycled and it does not have a filter. My tank size is about 1/2 a gallon.

you should be doing way more water changes for a tank that small. At lest 3 a week

Actually, with a 1/2 gallon, you should be doing a water change every 1 to 2 days.

I agree with the above posts. His water needs to be changed at least every other day, if not every day (if he's a full grown betta). If you upgrade to a bigger tank, you won't have to do water changes so frequently and I bet he'd be a much happier fish :) Just make sure you have a heater - they like it warm. Hope this helps you some :)

It could be, especially if you are only cleaning his tank once a week. Ammonia builds up very quickly in those little tanks. I mentioned before that some red is good because that means he's getting enough oxygen, but in this case, it just might be ammonia burns.
