Question Beginner to Aquariums

I am about to upgrade my blue crowntail betta to an aquarium. This will either be a 2 gallon or 5 gallon. ( a 2 gallon because I can get one for free and as a college student I am on a crazy budget haha) But I have no idea about the basics of aquariums. I know I can research this. But if you guys could give me a few tips that I can look into more later that would be great :)
Thanks,
Rachel

yay! big tanks! :)
there's a few things to consider, idyour tank going to have a filter? If so, you should consider cycling it :D make sure to looking into filter baffling in case the flow becomes too strong for the fish

Heating: For a 2-5 gallon i recommend an adjustable 25w heater.

Any ideas on what you are going to use for the substrate or whether you will be looking to plant your tank?

a 2 gallon is better than a bowl , so if that's the option that will help you save money ( to spend on fish food and medicine, gravel, plants w/e) instead of the 5 gallon, I'd recommend it. He would love the 5 gallon, but it's understandable XD

Does the 2 gallon come with:
-heater
-filter
-hood/cover
- not needed, but lights
-gravel
-silk/real plants

That's what you should have in order to set up a nice living condition.
Also, you are going to be doing a fish-in cycle so I'd recommend looking into these threads:
