Exclamation Please Answer

ok I am going to get a 5 gallon tank today and I need to know a couple of things about tanks.
1) How often do you change the water (100%? 50%? I'm not sure how much)
2) How often do you change the filter?
3) and Cycling?

Ive never owned an aquarium before so i have no idea :)

Welcome to the world of fish-keeping! :D

1) How often do you change the water (100%? 50%? I'm not sure how much)

It all depends if you have a filter. (seems like you do based on #2) 50% once a week if you do, and 1 100% and 1 50% if you don't. :D

2) How often do you change the filter?

You don't change it, ever. Unless the media is falling out. (media is the sponge/cartridge) If you do, the bacteria that eat the ammonia will be thrown away with it.

3) and Cycling?

Cycling is the process of making a big enough colony of beneficial bacteria which eat ammonia and nitrite; these are two compounds which hurt your fish, and they actually produce it by making waste. Learn more here, here, and here.

Filters are optional , but if you have it you just need to swish/rinse it weekly in the tank water. Do 50% water changes weekly. Do extra water changes a week if you need to depending on the water parameters (but never bad idea to do extra water changes) Check your water daily. If your cartridge is old or falling a part just put a new cartridge in the filter but keep the old one behind it for a few days. Vacuum the gravel when you do a water change.

Okay thanks :) I just brought home my new aquarium, but since I am moving into college Saturday I am going to wait until I am moved in to work on moving him into his new home. Any tips on setting up a new aquarium would be great :)

Tell us first if you going to cycle the tank or not? If you not cycling you don't need to use the filter , if you are cycling you will need to use filter and cycle the tank.

The OP should use the filter regardless if (s)he has it.

I don't use the filter in any of my tanks , filter is not a necessity for the betta. You can cycle tank with a filter in it or you can just do regular water changes like i do without the filter. But schedule for water changes are different for the not filtered tank. I have bettas for long time and never had filter in any of my 10 tanks.
