Yes, bettas are tropical fishes, and the water temperature should be around 78-82 degrees.

Get a submersible and adjustable heater, not those non-adjustable ones since those tend to not keep the water temperature at whatever the box says. it's just better to get an adjustable one.

any specific heaters you'd suggest for a 5.5g? my non-adjustable one seems to be inconsistent.

I love the Hydor Theo! 25W is best for the 5.5; http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...8&pcatid=11368

I love these heaters to death and I'm getting them in all my tanks eventually! So far I've got three so far and I LOVE them!

And actually it'd be beneficial to your cycle if you had the heater now. BB loooove hot waters so if you get the temp steady at 85-86, they'll love it and produce faster!

I don't have a 5.5 tank, but I was looking around in the forums, Ebay has a good deal right now, http://www.ebay.com/itm/281150355233...t_1034&afsrc=1

Not sure about those heaters... don't seem to have any brand name on them. Dubious. Go Hydor Theo or Eheim Hager
