If you get something without a hood, get a hood for it or put something that allows air to get through because they will jump!
If you were to get a 5-10 gallon, I would just go ahead and get the tank kit. I don't see why you'd pay $10 for a tank, then another $20 for a hood, when you can pay that much for the tank kit and get other things you need with it.
I can't wait to see pics of your fish and the tank! :D

well the walmart tank is 2.5 gallons, comes with fish food and a filter, and has a hood already. it looks like this.

Yeah I didn't have to worry about a hood, because my bf's dad had a 10 gallon light and that took up alot of room, then we put a piece of wood to cover up more, so I'm good. I was just sayin that a 10 gal with no hood was $13. I didn't know if anyone else has done what I have.

The minibowl will work perfectly.
They do sell 5 gallon kits for just a few dollars more though. I know that there are space issues for some people. I just think it kinda sucks that you can double the tank size for just a few dollars. :P
Oh and Vikki, I totally get where you are coming from. That sounds like a good setup! I know there are so many things you can do as a hood/lid. I just like having the light/hood/ and being able to have spots for the filter/heater.
I guess it's all in preferences. :D

A 2.5 gallon will be fine if you can't find anything else that you like or can afford. I would reccommend Hikari betta bio gold pellets or Wardley pellets.

you can get betta pellet food at walmart for under 3 bucks... i don't advise giving a betta goldfish food....

Yeah, I'm sure goldfish food was not intended for betta's. Good Luck!

Wardley's Pellets are $2 and there's a bunch. All my babies eat them. I never get a picky fish...weird.
