Ummm...

I think my fish ahs gone crazy. I usually leave his light on at night as it helps keep the water warm. Well I came out to the living room where he is and notice he was acting a little weird. He was flaring his gills. Just his gills, not his tail or fins. I have never seen him do this before. Could it just be that he sees his reflection better at night with just his light on? Or is there something wrong with him? I did turn his light out and he seems a little calmer right now...

Any ideas? Anyone else's fish do this?

Not sure, but its good to have 8-12 hrs lights out time. Its more natural for the fish and gives them some rest time.

Flaring means he's happy :)))))

My bettas flare all the time and it's never been a problem.

You WANT your bettas to flare.

They need day/night cycles just like we do. Can you get a heater to keep his water warm and turn his light off at night so he can get some rest?

I turned the light out and he calmed down. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen. I do have a heater that is supposed to keep the water at a min of 78. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't go that high....

Dang fish scared the pooh outta me when I saw him do that!! Hehe

Thanks.

I think he was just flaring at his reflection.

Those mini heaters never quite reach 78. Mine gets the water to 76.5, which is just a little cool, but Zeus does not seem to mind. Yes it is ideal for 78-80 F, but bettas can withstand a range from 70-88. Before I got the mini heater his water was 73 and he did not seem to mind that either, I did though. 76 is just fine, let him have lights out time at night. 24 hours of light is stressful to them.

Yeah, the mini heaters don't get very hot, thats why they're good in small tanks and bowls.

He's only in a 3 gallon tank right now. I turned the light off last night and he seemed fine after that. This morning he was in there zipping around like a mad man. I'll remember to turn the light out tonight.
