I would change a 2.5 gallon once a week. I would do a full change.

I just added a Hagen elite mini filter to my 2.5 gallon and so far I'm happy with it. it has a flow control on it so I can turn the flow way down. It's not too much current for my betta and it's pretty compact. Here's a link to it Aquatic - Products
You can also try a small sponge filter but sometimes those are hard to find at the LFS. You may have to order online. I was considering something like this Foam Aquarium Biological Filters: Oxygen Plus Bio-Filter 11

Was this directed at me? I got my filter at Petco and it was $9.99.

You don't need a filter as long as you keep the water changed (and you'll have to change the water with a filter anyway).
Anyway, I do a 100% water change once a week with my 2 gallon bowl.

Butting in this thread...those of you with filters on your 2.5ish gallon tanks, do you also have an air pump? My 2.5 gallon came with an air pump. So I have that tube and the heater tube and they take up a nice amount of room. If I got a small filter instead, could I remove the airpump and the underground filter think the airpump sits in and just use the filter?

Those of you that do use the filters, how often and how much are you changing your tanks?
