i read that you are supposed to leave the water out overnight in a plastic bucket. I was unable to get out to the store tonight to buy a bucket so I have the water sitting in a big soup pot. Is this ok or will not using plastic hurt my fish?
Leaving the water overnight in a bucket is pointless as chloramine is now added and as it is not a gas, it will not dissipate from the bucket completely. Chlorine on the other hand will eventually dissipate. Why not get a Prime dechlorinator to bind both substances? Dechlorinators can instantly bind both substances the moment you add it to your water.
very new to this, whats a prime dechlorinator? I thought the water was set out so it could get to room temp? (obviously i have alot to learn lol) i have aquasafe water conditioner that i was going to add to the water before doing the water change. is the prime dechlorinator something i would do instead?

Always match the temperature or you can leave a few degrees at least. Does your Aquasafe indicate it eliminates chloramine? If not, I'd switch to Prime. It reeks of sulfur odor but it's safe.
I use stress coat as my declorinator. Not only does it remove chlorine and chloromine, it has aloe in it that is beneficial to the fishes slime coating.
Aquasafe is a tetra product marketed as a water treatment, so it should be fine. But does not mention if it binds chloromine. To be on the safe side, getting something that mentions it is probably your best bet.
I use aquasafe and it's fine. It Neutralizes chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals harmful to fish. It also Enhances natural protective slime coating of fish andit works in seconds. (Yes, I read it off the bottle) lol
