Unhappy Fins Frayed By Filter???

I was looking at Flapjack this morning, and his topmost fin, looks like it has torn into smaller pieces, like shredded or something. One thing I noticed is that he always swims under the filter, where the water is being sucked up, so I doubt it is finrot, and is because of that, his fins got torned. There are no holes, its just like they got shredded....What should I do about this??

I turned off the filter as soon as I saw this, I feel so bad....

I don't know how to fix his poor fins but you can get a filter sponge to put inside the hole so it doesn't happen again. I had to do this because my guy kept doing the same thing. He didn't get his fins torn though.

I'm sure someone will be able to help you with the fins though.

what kind of filter do you have? I have one of those whisper filters from tetra, and there has to be like a one inch space to let the water go through, and between the space is where I always see him swimmin through. I couldn't put a sponge in there, if anything I would need to get a new filter....

I have an AquaTech filter. The sponge just blocks the hole so fins don't get sucked up. It still filters the water.

If it was caused by the filter, do I still need to medicate him? Change his water? What should I do?

You could also put a piece of pantyhose over the intake tube to prevent his fins from getting caught in it. You could use Betta Fix or just do more frequent water changes to make sure he doesn't get an infection.

ok thanks, I just may do that, becasue right now I don't have the money to buy a new filter, and since I found him like that this morning, its been off ever since. So, should I do a 100% water change right now, just to make sure his water is really clean? And by looking at pictures of fin rot, I am really convinced it wasn't that, just that dumb filter and my crazy fish who likes to explore every nook and cranny...oh well
