Algae

I am starting to have a problem with algae in my tank.

There is some black stuff growing on the gravel and orange stuff growing on the sides of the tank.

Yesterday I did a 75% water change and added aquarium salt, hoping this might kill at least some of the algae, unfortunately it didnt.

Does anyone else know anything I can do to get rid of the algae.

Live plants help a lot. Also how long are you leaving the light on in the tank? It is only recommended it is on for 6-8 hours daily. And finally otos or corey cats help also. Good luck getting rid of it! I just had that issue and between all three of these things, it is working so far :)

My tank does not get a lot of sunlight so I am not sure if live plants will survive, i dont really live otos or corey cats but i suppose i could get one. Also i was leaving my light on for 12+ hours a day, so i will make sure to change that.

You don't need sunlight. You need a light on your tank. Otos I know are schooling fish so I'd get at least two. I actually didn't think I'd like them...but I love em. They are so funny and entertaining. If you buy live plants, ask for ones that need low to medium light. If you know your wattage of the bulb when going in, they can tell you which ones will survive in the tank. And if you get a live plant along w/ some otos, they will eat off the plants if there is no algae in the tank

I might just have to go to my LPS and ask for a live plant.
