Bettas can live in small tanks but they do a lot better in larger tanks. Most of the guys and gals around here recommend 5-10 gallon or larger tanks. The water needs to be between 78-82(I think). Most fish are picky eaters, but you will have to figure out what yours likes to eat. Water changes are important! I know I missed some stuff but I know someone will be around shortly to fill in the blanks. There are some pretty awesome people on here with a lot of knowledge!!
Tara, I think you covered it pretty good! You can also use a filter but they aren't required. You'll also want gravel or glass rocks and decorations for the tank. Plants are good, too, either live or fake. I recommend silk because plastic can tear a betta's fins.
I would recomend at least a 2 gallon, at bare minimum. They will be happier in a bigger one though. I've heard people on here that have up to 10 gallons with just their one betta. Don't forget a heater, they are important unless you live in a very hot place.
