Let's start with the size tank you have him in and work our way up to food. I want to see him live more than six months.

Did you start with a new tank or the same tank your old fish was in? Sometimes tanks can hold diseases from previous fish.

One food you can give him is available at Petco normally which is Omega One betta pellets. Another food people feed is New Life Spectrum. Alternate the foods every other day so there is variety. A bettas stomach is about the size of his eye so only a few pellets are needed with Omega One. If you let them sit in water you will these pellet get bigger than his stomach by swelling up. For New Life Spectrum you can feed maybe six pellets. I only feed once day but up to twice a day could be ok. Overfeeding shortens a betta's life.

Filters are nice to have to help keep your tank cleaner and have beneficial bacteria but it's not a neccessity. The best filter for betta's is a sponge filter. You can find them on ebay for a few bucks and on Amazon.com for about $6.00. You would need an air pump rated for a small tank to run it. Do you siphon (vaccumn) clean your gravel?

I am sorry to hear you've lost your other fish so soon. What do think caused your other fish to die?
