Dust from Gravel?

I'm not sure if this was the right forum to ask but I think it might be.

Last night, I was at Walmart, just looking at the betta fish and I decided to buy another bowl and a fish. (I already had one fish at home) I got home, and set up the bowl, and I decided to put the one I already had in it. Sadly that betta passed last night, it refused to eat.

So, I am going to buy a new betta on Sunday to put in that bowl. I noticed the gravel is really dusty and it rises to the top of the water. Is this a health hazard? I tried washing the gravel a bit and its still dusty.

Is it natural gravel or painted? If it isn't colored/painted I would boil it. Otherwise, rinse it really really well...over and over again. Hopefully that helps.

You just need to keep washing it. I find a strainer works best with small amounts at a time.
