Unhappy New Betta Owner-Need Advice

I have only had my betta for a few days, and so far he has appeared to be in good health. He is eating, active and alert. Tonight though he noticed his reflection for the first time and he "puffed up" (for lack of the proper term) and then secreted something yellow (it appeared to come from his gills). I am very concerned about this. Does anyone have idea what that could be? Is he sick?

"Puffing out" is normal for bettas. That is called flaring and bettas do it to intimidate their rival (in this case, your betta sees his reflection and thinks it's another male threatening his territory) or show off. All bettas can flare, some do more than others.

As for secreting something yellow, I don't have the faintest clue what that could be... Is it a liquid? Can you describe it more detail?

Thank you so much for getting back to me. It was a small amount of a thicker dark yellow liquid that appeared to be coming from his gills.

No problem.

Not sure what the liquid could be though... Hm. Did it sink to the bottom of the tank? The only thing I can think of is that maybe it was bits of food your fish regurgitated out through his gills.

Oh wow. Thank you so much. That makes a lot of sense. It sank to the bottom of the tank but it dissipated in the water, so it not visible. I tested the water quality and it seems fine. Would you recommend changing the water today just to be safe or do you think it is fine?

Well, it came from your betta fish... So, it should be fine. :)
