Wanting to get a new Betta

Hi! Im new to the website but i was thinking yesterday about how i would love to get a new Betta and i found this website. I use to have one and it was in a vase kind of for decoration with a plant. I wasn't aware Betta's needed a bigger tank with filter etc. The pet store told us that all we needed was a vase or small fish bowl because Betta's don't need much room. Now reading on here i know we were told wrong and im angry at the pet store for not informing me and my mom more on them :[ I really want to get a new Betta because they are so pretty and fun to have and i have some money saved up! Could you guys tell me what i need for a new Betta like what tank water food etc. and maybe an estimated cost>I would greatly appreciate that! Also another question, is it okay to buy a Betta from say Petco or Petsmart? Where should i buy if not and where is it okay to get the supplies etc from?

Thank you so much! Sorry if i wrote too much!

ps- I have cats and a dog so i don't know if there is a tank where my cats would be less likely to bother. thanks again :]

You'll need: 2.5+ gallon tank (with a lid), small heater, small filter, you should use tap water and use a water condtioner, any betta pellet and freeze dried bloodworms. Yes it's ok to buy from a petstore :)

Welcome to FishForum. I agree with what Mr. Vampire said. One piece of advice - never trust what the petstore clerks tell you. They are undereducated in fish-keeping.

Yep. Mr Vampire is right. It is fine to buy from pet stores, just don't listen to what they say!! I hope that you can get another Betta. They are really great pets, but watch out, they are highly addictive!!!!!!!!!

BiOrbs are overly priced. You can get a 5 or 10 gallon for cheaper than what you pay for a BiOrb. They are definitely not worth what they are priced for.

I think I paid close to $50 for a Eclipse Corner 5...but I know Petco has 10 gallon tanks for around $20 or so.

This is a review someone on the forum gave it: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=24348

lol, BiOrb. It makes me laugh. Personally, I think they look very silly.

Let's see... you want a price quote, eh?

All right, let's break this down into parts:

Plain 2.5 gal tank = $11.00
Tetra Whisper filter= $5.00
Filter cartridges= $2.50
Betta food pellets= $3.00
Betta fish= $4-7.00
Lighting/hood= $6.00 (or you can make your own lid for cheaper)
Blood worms= $3.00
Betta fish medicine (depending on what you'd need in advance)= $3-5.00
Water conditioner (a big bottle of it) = $7.00
Decorations (depending on what kind)= $2-10 on up

Having a best friend that'll listen to you, no matter what: Priceless.

Initial set-up can be costly, but once you've made all of your purchases, upkeep isn't costly at all.... at least until you find yourself getting another Betta. As was the case with me.

Also, welcome to the Forum!

I really like these little Eclipse type tanks with the under-hood filter- my ex husband had one with guppies in it for several years. Prob is that you need the specific filter for your size tank (there's like 20 different ones) and if it ever breaks down you're kinda out of luck.

The filters aren't that hard to find. I have a Eclipse Corner 5 and I am getting my Eclipse System 6 this week. And they do come with warranty's... I love these tanks.

Yep Tian Tian covered it well. I also agree that the Biorbs are too pricey. You can find other much cheaper.
