I'm 29 and living with my grandparents after my divorce- but i've always had animals- cats and snakes and bettas- a few birds- tame rats-
I think it's important to keep the tanks as clean and pleasant as you can so they have nothing to gripe about. Also make them as decorative as possible, which is easy with bettas.
Actually I think my dad got me my first betta when I was around six. He was blue and we fed him frozen shrimp from a pouch.
My son loves our Lulu- he calls her 'Lulu a blue goldfish' -he's almost 4

My mother isn't so happy with the one fish I have now. She really isn't happy that I'm setting up a second tank now so that I can get another. xD

Mostly though, it's just because I'm spending so much money on them. I have a habit of trying to give my pets far more than they need, and it ends up costing me. So.... my mother has a reason to fuss about it, it's not because she doesn't like them.

Still bringing home another one. -_-;

I used to have 10 ferrets, lol.
I live with my boyfriend and his family. Everyone seems fine with my betta addiction except for my boyfriend. He says I have more than a passion for them and I'm addicted and obsessed. I don't see anything wrong with it though, lol.

My lfs sells every type of pet you can think of. When I went in last week the baby ferrett kept coming up to the side of the bin I was on. He/she was so cute! Whichever side I went on it followed - I wish I could have brought it home! :)

We did ferret shows in Columbus, OH. That's why we had so many. And yes, they like to steal things, lol. My friends ferret loved her bras for some reason. She was have company, a guy friend and all of a sudden here comes her ferret running through the living room with one of her bras in its mouth. LOL
