It's been about a month since I began my sorority. I admit it that prior to setting up the 20 g. that my efforts to mix girls in smaller tanks was quite chancy and involved quite a few nipped fins.
Today, in preparation for setting up a 30 gal. I visited the local petco to buy some plants and walked out with another 6 bettas. 3 tiny girls and 3 boys.
I wondered if there would be trouble introducing 3 more ladies to my 20 G. I aclimated them with the lights off... and my 5 swormed. the cups floated for about an hour and a half with my adding a little tank water to the cups every 10 minutes. by the time I added the girls to the tank they were all fine.
its about 6 hours later and I see that they are all re setting the pecking order. the big girls keep coming to the small ones to assert dominance but no chasing has occured like the initial set up with the tank.
the large bettas also seem to be trying to fit the cories into this new pecking order. coming to the bittim of the tank to nose the algae pellet that I had broken and pushing the cories away from it... this is the first time I m seeing them show interest in the cories food and I am wondering if bettas are fearing starvation with additions to the tank population.
the boys...are not half as fun as the girls. beautiful - yes. the colors and fins are something else. but they are all acting really shy ... and dont swim around half as much as when the girls were in those tanks.
Im having a hard time seeing their personalities yet. Im sure the shyness will go away ... I hope! I know its not possible to mix but I wonder if this solitary nature just makes them seem sad.
I will take pictures this weekend if the shyness dissapates. the king betta , Arthur is already beginning to show himself more. now I only hope that Gawain and Lancelot will follow suit.
