Can Bettas choke?

My little guy seems to have something that looks like a large meal worm hanging out of his gill... he has refused to eat for the past week and I am wondering if that is the reason why... maybe he had too big of a piece of food and didn't chew it?

It's pretty nasty looking and I have my hopes that it will just fall off since I am not sure how to go about removing it.

Is something like this common or even possible?

I don't think they can choke, or have food hanging out of their gills. Could it be a parasite or something like that?

I tried to take a picture but he was swimming pretty fast and they weren't coming out clear... it is gone now, I am not sure if it fell off or what happened. He still doesn't really want to eat.

I would change his diet but, I am not sure what to switch to. right now I feed him tropical flakes and meal worms as a treat andhe wont eat either one. I have pellets but he wont eat those either.

First of all, feed him Omega One Betta Buffet or New Life Spectrum, they are much healthier. Second, can you fill out this form:

Housing
What size is your tank?
What temperature is your tank?
Does your tank have a filter?
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?
Is your tank heated?
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?
How often do you feed your betta fish?

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change?
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
How old is your fish (approximately)?

(or at least as many as possible)

Yes, they can theoretically choke in that they require water to move over the gills to breath, so if something were to obstruct the flow of water over the gills, then they would not get oxygen. That also means that something could get stuck in their throat (entrance to stomach) and prevent the fish from eating, yet it will be able to breath fine.

Sounds like a parasite to me.

Housing
What size is your tank? 5.5 Gallon
What temperature is your tank? Between 70 and 75 degrees
Does your tank have a filter? Yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? Yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? None, thought about getting a snail though

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? BettaMin tropical Medley (Flakes) and also dried Meal(Blood?) Worms
How often do you feed your betta fish? Once a day with the flakes, occasional treat at night with the blood worms

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? Was once every week, college does not allow for a water change every week so, I have added a filter and up'd the tank size from a 2.5 gallon to a 5.5 gallon.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Depends, when I am cleaning the tank I do a 100% change. Other than that about 25% - 50%

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? I have not tested the water, I do use Betta Conditioner when I change the water though.

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? He has nipped fins, there are few white spots on his body and a few areas of white on his tail and the (fin?) that hangs from his throat area.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He won't eat and is becoming aggressive towards the objects in his tank (dragon statue which has since been removed)
When did you start noticing the symptoms? A week and a half ago (9/10 or so)
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? Aquired a new tank and a filter in fear that the water was getting too dirty too fast. I have added a live plant to the water (But, I am thinking that is going to die since it is completely submerged...)
Does your fish have any history of being ill? No
How old is your fish (approximately)? I got him from the pet store in March 2013, 6 Mos.

Your tank is WAY to cold. They really need 80 degree water. You can get a heater for about 15 dollars at Walmart. Blood worms should be only fed 1 day a week as a full meal and he should be fated the day after.

Ok, I read the thermometer wrong. It is at 80. I have a heater and it is cranking to keep it at 80.

This is the best picture I can probably get with my phone.
