my 2 Betta's were living together quite happily with a few occasions of the female flaring at the male however now she is becoming more aggressive when the tank lights are on she is constantly chasing and taking bites out if his fins so he has taking into hiding in their plant pots , there was a particular act of aggression yesterday which caused him to get wedged in the back hole of the plant pot so is now injured. however when the lights a switched off , he becomes the aggressive one chasing and biting her fins what should i do ?

Wait wait - are you housing your bettas in the same tank? If you are - you need to get one of them out asap. Bettas should not be kept together.

Don't attempt to put male and female together unless you're breeding them. Take them out!!!

I kinda see what you mean though. I've had pairs live together in a tank for a few weeks and no harm came to either of them. But I seperated them and said it was a failed spawn. Just take them out. They can't live together.

A male and female should only be housed together for breeding purposes.. you'll need another tank..

thanks for the welcome :) i thought u could keep a male and a female together they've been together for months now since they were both young, happily swiming around with a couple of rasporas keeping them company but the agression has only just started, and its the light on light off thing thats concerning me ! i shall try to buy a divider tomorrow morning but there only in a 20L tank will this be ok ? i also have a 90L tank will either the male or female get on with my other fish there are platties , guppiers shrimp, a coupple of saddleback loaches , danio's and rasporas ?

Splitting a 20L should be okay. That will give them each a little over 2.5 gallons.

You can split the tank, but remove one or the other NOW.

Yes, like AngelicScars said: you need to split them now. Someone will end up dead if you don't (or seriously injured).
