Fish room odor: solutions?

Hi, all. My "fish room" is located in the laundry room of my home. The babies from my first batch are 10 weeks old now, and over the past week, the room has developed a distinct and unpleasant odor. I am guessing it is from the interaction of the fish food with the water, but none of the water is nasty or old--I do change it!

Is this normal for a fish room? Is there a way to control or prevent it? My laundry room has a chute leading to each other floor in the house, so I will have to relocate my fish room if I cannot eliminate the odor.

There's no distinct location for the odor? If no, I would be really carefully checking the room for mold. I'm assuming your fish room is kept both humid and warm- which is perfect for the stuff.

It's not a mold odor; it's difficult to describe. All my containers and tanks are open at the moment, which might be causing the problem....

From personal experience I know mold doesn't always smell like 'mold'. We had the weirdest problem with some sweet-smelling stuff this summer. It almost smelled like someone was making banana bread! XD But all the same, if you sniffed long enough, you could tell it was mold.

I can't imagine clean water smelling bad enough to notice, even with multiple tanks.

I'm assuming you use whatever sink is in the room on a regular basis? I know sink traps can dry out and cause nasty 'backwash' odors from the sewer.

Any chance some small wild creature found an inconvenient place to die?

Are they NPT or bare bottom? How are they set up?

They are bare-bottom. I will have to sniff around and see if I can isolate the odor. Perhaps it's from the sponge filter, or from the sink, as Noctiluca mentioned. It's almost a sweet, yeasty odor--but not pleasant.

Does it smell like a pond? That is the most common fish room odor because of the humidity. This is most often caused by open tanks.

Yeah my bedroom used to smell sort of 'swampy' when I had all my tanks uncovered and the door shut.

But I never got a yeasty odour from my tanks.

Nowadays all mine are covered in cling wrap. It serves multiple purposes: stops jumping, cuts down on evaporation and has reduced humidity and condensation on the windows (was starting to get mould popping up).
